Elly's Journey to Mayo

Today was Elly's bone scan at Mayo. We started the day out at 2:30 this morning as Elly was wide awake. Not sure if she knew something was up or if she just thought it was time to play but at 4 she decided to go back to sleep. Just in time for mommy and daddy to get up and get ready for the day. It took us about an hour and forty-five minutes to get up there.

When we arrived they took us in a room and started telling us what they were going to do and what to expect. But they were talking as if they were not going to use sedation or general anesthesia. When I mentioned this they they had to look further into this. An hour later they were finally ready to get the ball rolling and get Elly ready for her procedure. Elly was great until we were ready to put the gown on and then she started to know that something was up. Unfortunately, they would only allow one of us in with her as they put her under. Harry let me go with her and I was able to hold her until she was under. She did a lot of crying but that was good to take those big breaths of air to get that gas into her system. After she was under I had to leave the room and that was the hardest part. Leaving my baby girl behind. The procedure was about two and half hours long all together. When they were wheeling her to her recovery room they actually went by us and we could see that she was coming too and a little cranky. They had us come in right away and I was able to hold her right away. She was a little inconsolable and so they gave her a little something to relax her. They said that sometimes when babies come out of anesthesia they come out of the sleep almost raw without knowing what is going on and it is a little freaky so if they give them a little something to relax them then they are able to sleep a little and breath that gas out more. Once she was over that she did great. I was able to sit in her recovery room for about an hour and just rock with her. Something that I have not been able to do for a very long time after she got mobile. No time for cuddling. :) They did want her to drink some juice before we could leave to make sure that she wouldn't get sick and she did great with that.

The ride home was uneventful as she slept from the time we left Rochester until we got home which was around 3. We played and she was finally wanting to eat some yummies. So I made her some pancakes (something easy on her throat and stomach) and she ate pretty good for all that she went through and for not eating since midnight. Around 5:30 she was back asleep. So we will see how the night goes. We leave for Rochester around 12:30 tomorrow for a 2:45 appt to find out the results. Will update after we get home and settled.

And yes, this was a milestone in Elly's life so we did get some pictures of her in the recovery room. Some would shake their heads as to why would you take pictures but I think someday she will appreciate the pictures in her album. This is her first procedure, first time at Mayo and first time in the hospital minus being born.
