The last 24 hours have been interesting, concerning and frustrating. Yesterday I got a phone call from daycare that after Elly's nap she would not bear weight on her left leg. She asked if I could come right away. Of course, I was out of there within 5 minutes and over to Elly within another 5 minutes. I checked her out and listened to the days events for Elly. Then decided after speaking with Harry on the phone that the best thing to do was to take her in right away. After seeing a doctor on-call (our regular doctor was not there) and having x-rays that were not pleasant to go through we found out nothing. The doctor said that maybe she accidently hurt herself and was not not wanting to use her leg. She said recommended tylenol and if she was not better within 24-48 hours to bring her back in. Well when I got her home, Harry observed her the rest of the night along with lots of talking of thoughts and theories. We decided that we would bring her back into the clinic today and see her regular doctor. This was going to be tricky as it was also going to be during my mom's surgery. So we made some phone calls last night and found out that my dad would be able to come up also so that we would not be leaving mom alone at any time.
This morning I called right at 7 AM to get an appointment. I have always been told that there are spots open just for the same day call ins and that I should never have a problem getting an appointment....wrong! This morning the receptionist told me that Dr. Erickson had no opening for today. I asked to be transfered to her nurse. I got her voicemail and asked her to call me back with explaining the situation. After about 2 hours she finally called me back and told me that she had opening but since it was 2 hours later...I couldn't get in until 3. I was very much frustrated but thankful in the end as my mom's surgery was not over util 1. So I went to her appointment to find out that her x-ray was good and there was no reason to run another one. There were two things that it could possibly be...1 it could be a viral infection in the bones (very common in this age group) or 2 it could be that the hip was not out of it's socket but slipped a little from growth. We were going to go with the viral infection theory first and go with the second if need be. Unfortunately, the viral infection theory meant a blood test. I was informed it would be a finger prick. That is fine because at 12 months they had to do it for the iron levels and I knew the routine. When the lab tech came in she also came in with two other nurses and explained that unfortunately they would not be able to do a finger poke as they needed a whole vile therefore they would had to do a regular blood draw. My heart sunk. We tried checking her first arm with her sitting on my lap but she was too squirmy therefore we had to put her on the table. After checking both arms with no veins popping we had to put a warm pack on her arm for a little bit. Then we started over again. All this time with Elly screaming at the top of her lungs. And I couldn't do anything to comfort her but knowing that we needed to do this to get to the bottom of everything. Therefore we finally get the needle in to find out that they couldn't find the vein. So then they started to dig. Poor baby is all I could think about. They finally got enough. I was able to pick my baby up off the table and comfort her. Then the waiting started as we had to wait about 30 minutes for the results. The first test came back that the white blood cells were a little higher then normal so she did have an infection of some sort. Her second test (sed rates) were within normal range but still a little suspecious. Therefore, Dr. Erickson then went and consulted with the pediatric orthopedic in regards to the results. They both agreed that Elly did indeed have a viral infection in her bones. Like I said earlier, it is common in this age group and it typically is in the hips and legs and that is why she is not able to walk. This only lasts from 1-3 days. I am to give her motrin 3 times a day until better and to watch for signs of redness, swelling, and/or if not better by Monday. Otherwise, she will be as good as new by Monday.
Other good news...as I said today was my mom's surgery. All went well. The surgery took 3 1/2 hours with a lot of damage but the surgeon felt optomistic that he was able to repair a lot of it. She was discharged and headed home by a little after 5 tonight. I called at 7 and she was at home, in her recliner and doing well.
